Thyroid optimization is the process of balancing and enhancing your thyroid hormone levels to ensure your body functions at its best. The thyroid plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, energy levels, mood, and overall health. When thyroid hormone levels are too low (hypothyroidism) or too high (hyperthyroidism), it can lead to a range of symptoms, such as fatigue, weight gain, depression, or difficulty concentrating.
Thyroid optimization involves a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms and a detailed analysis of your thyroid lab results to determine if you need treatment. The goal is to restore your thyroid hormone levels to an optimal range, often through personalized medication adjustments, to help you feel your best.

To determine if you qualify for thyroid optimization and replacement therapy, you will start with a comprehensive consultation where we’ll review your symptoms, medical history, and any concerns you have related to thyroid function. A thorough blood panel will be ordered to assess your thyroid hormone levels. Based on your symptoms and lab results, we’ll determine if your thyroid is functioning suboptimally and if hormone replacement or optimization is needed. From there, we will develop a personalized plan to restore balance and improve your overall well-being that includes medication, dietary/nutritional and lifestyle recommendations.

It’s not uncommon for primary care providers to tell patients that their thyroid levels are “normal” based on standard lab ranges. However, even if your levels fall within the "normal" range, you may still experience symptoms of thyroid dysfunction, such as fatigue, weight gain, or mood changes. At our clinic, we take a more comprehensive approach by looking beyond the standard lab ranges and focusing on optimal thyroid levels.
We thoroughly evaluate not only TSH but also free T3, free T4, and reverse T3, amongst many others, and we consider how these levels correlate with your symptoms. Our goal is to help you feel your best, not just meet basic lab criteria. If you’re still experiencing symptoms despite “normal” labs, thyroid optimization could still be the right approach for you.

With thyroid optimization, the medications prescribed will depend on your specific needs and lab results. Commonly, patients are prescribed thyroid hormone replacements to balance their levels. These may include:
Compounded desiccated thyroid: Derived from natural sources (usually porcine), this medication provides both T3 and T4 hormones for a more holistic replacement approach.
Levothyroxine (T4): A synthetic form of the T4 hormone, commonly prescribed to increase T4 levels in the body.
Liothyronine (T3): A synthetic form of the active T3 hormone, used to directly address low T3 levels.
During your initial consultation, we carefully assess your hormone levels and symptoms to determine the right balance of medications, ensuring you receive a treatment plan that’s personalized for your optimal health.
At our clinic, we prefer to use compounded desiccated thyroid hormone because it more closely mirrors the natural hormones your body produces. This bioidentical approach provides a more balanced and natural option for hormone replacement, better reflecting the needs of your body and promoting optimal results.
